Five questions to identify your team's Key Performance Indicators

Improve your team performance

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are metrics that you can monitor over time to assess how you are progressing towards your goals.  Measuring your performance against KPIs can tell you whether you’re on track, and where there is room for improvement.

The real question is, how do you set meaningful KPIs for your team that drive high performance? Too often, we see organisations setting arbitrary targets that don’t mean anything. Don’t fall into the same trap. Work with your team to answer these five questions below for effective KPIs.

Five questions to ask your team

Question 1: What is your team purpose and how would you know if you are achieving it?

Question 2: What would it look and feel like to be a high-performing team? How would you evidence that?

Question 3: How do you know if you are having a good day?

Question 4: How do your customers measure your performance?

Question 5: What are your team objectives for the year? How would you know if you are on track, or have achieved them?

What's next?

Now that you’ve worked with your team to set your KPIs, put them somewhere everyone can see on a regular basis, like your Information Centre. Decide who is responsible for measuring, how often you will collect and present the data, what action your KPI should drive, and when will you review the metrics as a team?  Don’t let your KPIs gather dust for another year – make them work harder for you and drive performance improvement.
