Hire people who won't mutiny (or eat you)
In Start with Why, Simon Sinek shares a story about Ernest Shackleton, an early twentieth century adventurer who hired a crew of twenty-seven to explore the Antarctic with him. Unfortunately, their boat sank. The crew where left stranded and tried to make their way back to safety. Sinek notes that:
“What makes the story of Endurance so remarkable, however, is not the expedition, it’s that throughout the whole ordeal no one died. There were no stories of people eating others and no mutiny. This was not luck. This was because Shackleton hired good fits. He found the right men for the job. When you fill an organisation with good fits, those who believe what you believe, success just happens.”

Be clear on your purpose
To hire people who share your purpose, you need to be clear on what your purpose is, and how to communicate it effectively. Hilary helped us to clarify and tell our story, which we now use in our recruitment process as well as other areas of the business. If you would like help with determining your purpose, reply to this email or use firstname.lastname@example.org.
Select people who will act upon your values
Mapping your values will help you to identify the behaviours you want to see in your workforce. You can then use these mapped behaviours when recruiting new staff to ensure a values fit. In the video below, Rhiannon explains how to complete a values mapping exercise. You’ll need this template to get started.
If you would like help with this, we offer in-house values mapping workshops. Reply to this email or use email@example.com to get started.
By hiring people who share your purpose and values, you reduce your chances of hiring the wrong fit, ultimately saving you valuable time and resources. Instead, you’ll develop a tribe of committed, likeminded people, who are dedicated to furthering your cause and making a positive impact in your world.
